Creating Sustainable Livelihood Opportunities for Vulnerable Groups in Beit Awwa

Through BASR’s Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Program, Iman, a 44-year-old woman with physical and visual disabilities from Beit Awwa, was identified and assessed through the program’s Inclusive Case Management approach.

Iman lives with her sisters and, following the loss of both parents, had no source of income. Based on the individualized assessment conducted by the CBR Program, she was referred to BASR’s Economic Empowerment Unit to explore sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Considering her abilities, interests, values, essential needs, and the resources available to her family, BASR developed a self-employment intervention designed to enhance her independence and financial security. A small grocery store was established in a family-owned space near her home and stocked with essential goods, providing her with a sustainable source of income.

Today, the grocery store continues to support the family’s livelihood, strengthening their economic resilience and increasing their participation in the local community.

As part of BASR’s ongoing follow-up process, the CBR Program continues to assess the business’s growing needs and provide relevant support. One year after the establishment of the business, BASR provided a refrigerator to improve the store’s operations and contribute to the project’s long-term sustainability.

Today, Iman independently manages the grocery store, proving that with appropriate support and individual determination, lasting change can be achieved.

This intervention reflects BASR’s commitment to ensuring that no person with a disability is left behind by promoting inclusion, economic participation, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
